Importance of drinking water and healthy hydration.
Are you aware than many people just don’t drink as much water as they should? Healthy hydration should be an essential part of your daily diet. By the time you know you are thirsty, the body is already dehydrated and that is why it sends you the thirst signal.
You and I know that the human body is largely made up of water – we learnt that in school. And yet, most people simply do not drink enough water. Unfortunately, unlike other nutrients, water is not stored in the body. Therefore, it needs to be continuously replenished.
The body loses water through sweat, urination, feces and even the air we breathe out. If you don’t drink enough fluid you can get dehydrated and worse. Even a 5% drop in your body fluids will lead to 25-30% loss of energy.
You can also suffer from bad breath, your digestion is impaired and your brain won’t function properly. You can suffer from headaches, irritability, heartburn and even body ache.
So you need to drink 8-12 glasses of water in a day, over a period of time. Normally you should drink 50-75 percent of your body weight in fluids. A sportsperson will need to drink more (up to 75 percent), depending on his activity level. And not just plain water, but fluid and electrolytes, so that the body does not suffer in any way.
Just as the body can go into shock if it is severely dehydrated, if there is an overload of water the same can happen. The fluid balance is maintained when the water and electrolytes are had at regular intervals.
Plain water may not always do the trick and that is why electrolytes are necessary. In fact, too much plain water can lead to ‘flooding’ - diluting essential fluids in the body. The sodium-potassium balance is vital for the body to function at an optimum level.
We all know importance of drinking water. But many people do not take in enough, because they don’t like to drink plain water. They take coffee, soda and even alcohol, thinking that they are getting enough liquids. Unfortunately these have a reverse effect as a diuretics, making you pass more urine than you have taken in.
For every cup or glass of coffee or soda or alcohol you take, you should take an equivalent amount of water.
