EARLY Bad Habits Die Hard

As a parent, it is your responsibility to raise your children to the best of your ability. This includes helping them form good habits that will last throughout their lives; VERY high up on this list of good habits is healthy eating for kids. Fortunately, there are many simple things you can do every day to instill this idea in your kids.

It’s Okay to Play with Your Food!

Make sure that your fridge is always brimming with vitamin-packed vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and carrots. To appease your little ones, serve vegetables (and fruits!) that are cut into interesting shapes. Have your kids arrange pieces of food to look like a silly face and watch how fast those cucumbers disappear! Sounds goofy, but making healthy eating for kids FUN is the best trick in the book "Moms are sneaky, aren’t they? "

Quick Recipe:

For an easy after school snack

  • cut a stalk of celery in half.
  • Spread peanut butter over each piece and then
  • sprinkle generously with raisins. Voila, ants on a log! An oldie but a goodie, eh?

Absolute No-No’s!

Now that you know to stock up on fruits and veggies, it’s time to discuss what products should NOT be nestled in your pantry.

For starters, make an effort to avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar and sodium. A good rule of thumb is to buy products that come in the least packaging (i.e. fresh produce). Try to make sure that your cart is half-filled with these items. The reasoning behind this is that heavily packaged foods are often very high in sodium, preservatives, coloring, sweeteners, ingredients that alter texture, trans fat and others type unhealthy oils and chemicals.

Now let’s talk about our kids favorite food:

  • The potato chip. It’s delicious, yes, but also chock-full of fat! If you still want to indulge, stick to low- or no-fat varieties.
  • Soft drinks. Also, avoid them. The carbonation ruins the enamel of the teeth and you can bet that all that sugar doesn’t do much good, either! Even fruit juices are high in sugar and calories. So, your best bet is always water.
  • Now, onto my favorite guilty pleasure: chocolate! Actually, dark chocolate is high in antioxidants and provides a good source of iron. Milk chocolate is what you want to limit, though. It is high in fat and calories and many good properties of natural chocolate are stripped away in an effort to make the final product sweeter and creamier. More examples and ideas for healthy replacement here.
  • Also, avoid snack cakes and cookies. When your kids’ tummies are grumblin’, simply fix them a snack yourself, such as Ants on a Log (recipe above). More on healthy kids snacks here.
