Maintaining a Healthy Diet for Kids

Healthy-Eating-for-Children

How Healthy Eating for Children Can Change Your Life

As children in the United States and all over the world pack on the pounds, it’s clear we need to start implementing a healthy diet for kids. Fruits, vegetables and lean proteins are too often overlooked for quick sugars and processed starches.

Healthy eating for children starts with the adults in their lives, and it’s our job to figure out how to teach kids to eat healthy. They can’t do it on their own.

Healthy Eating for Kids Starts at the Grocery Store

  • Where do you shop? If you use a large chain grocer, chances are you’re filling your cart with processed junk food and easy meals. Pre-fried chicken nuggets are not healthy for anyone.

If you want to maintain a healthy diet for kids, you’ll put that box of macaroni and cheese down, and instead pick up cheese from the deli and whole wheat pasta. You can make it yourself, giving your children double the protein and nutrients and half the fat.

  • Think about where your food is coming from. Dairy and carbohydrates are necessary for a healthy diet for kids, but these products can be marred by growth hormones given to the livestock, or ultra processing, which strips the food of its nutrients all together, leaving empty, fattening calories behind.
  • Meal planning is essential in your journey on how to teach kids to eat healthy. If you have a set idea of what you will make for the week, you can look up recipes and buy fresh ingredients.
  • Fresh ingredients are key to a healthy diet for kids. Fitness experts say that anything that can be shelved for more than a week should not be in your kitchen if you’re promoting healthy eating for kids.
  • Take your children shopping with you. Let them pick out the fresh fruits and vegetables they enjoy and they’ll be more inclined to eat them later, knowing they made the choice.

Healthy Eating for Children Continues in the Kitchen

Don’t stop at the store. Bring your children into the kitchen with you. Let them do simple tasks like stirring the flour into soup stock or mixing the fresh produce puree into the meatloaf. If they are involved, they’ll be more interested in eating your healthy options.

While you’re in the kitchen, don’t forget the main food groups. Lean proteins and simple carbohydrates help stock the body with needed nutrients. Each meal you prepare should have a helping of healthy fats, like fish oil, nuts or seeds, too.

How to Teach Kids to Eat Healthy

Start with yourself. Children learn from what they see the adults around them doing.

If you are constantly digging for fruits and vegetables as a snack, they will take their cue from you. If you make them a healthy dinner and you eat it, too, they will be more likely to enjoy their healthy food. They will not know any better.

As the nutrients replenish their bodies, they will feel more alert and active, meaning they’ll start exercising more, if even through play.

Running around as opposed to playing video games and watching TV is an important piece to weight loss and health, but it all starts with a healthy diet for kids.

They won’t even realize that they’re burning more calories; they’ll simply be having fun.

Using these tools, you can make a healthy diet for kids without having to hear them whine about not having sugary snacks. You can promote healthy eating for children, and you’ll see the energetic results within days.
